A young Mountcharles man is delighting fans of good coffee and sustainable living with his new business.

Ben Sheridan has opened ‘Contains Coffee’ and can currently be found in the car park behind Specsavers in Donegal Town.

Now in his second month of business, Ben is very happy with the response to date.

“It has been great so far,” he told the Donegal Post. “The reaction has been very good.”

Anyone visiting Contains Coffee can see instantly that Ben is passionate not only about good coffee but also about promoting a zero waste lifestyle.

“I worked in hospitality and always had a passion for food and coffee,” he said. “The idea for the business came from thinking about innovative ways to use space. I lived in Canada and when I was there I saw shipping containers popping up everywhere as grocery shops, homes and all sorts of uses.

“When I moved home I took some time to look at the market for this type of coffee business.”

Everything that Ben hands over the counter can be composted. So even though they are single use cups and lids, they can be broken down in 16 weeks.

“There are no public composting bins in Donegal Town so I encourage people to brings their cups and lids back here,” he said. “I can add it to my own compost bin here. That ensures that it will be broken down into compost.”

He also welcomes people bringing their own reusable cups. And of course, it is not just coffee he sells. There are other drinks available as well as tasty treats made from high quality ingredients.

While Contains Coffee is primarily a take away unit, there is some seating inside. There is also a rustic seating area in the carpark which has proved popular with customers during the recent good weather.

And Ben is also keen to support other Irish businesses with a similar zero waste ethos.

He stocks items from companies including Pear And Paper based at Donegal Craft Village; bamboo toothbrushes from Drimarone-based Zero Waste; Hanna Hats; and the quirky but delightful Badly Made Books.

Ben has already made quite an impact in his Donegal Town base where he plans to spend much of the summer. He then intends to take Contains Coffee to festivals and other events before heading to the Belfast Christmas Market later in the year.
